The Tan Throwdown

12 Aug

Summer may be coming to an end for some of us, but that doesn’t mean that the end of August can’t be filled with frolicking in the glorious outdoors, which often leads to an attractive tan. Unfortunately, this tanning buisness won’t fly anymore. It is well known that exposing one’s skin to the sun’s rays without ample sunscreen can lead to skin cancer and in some cases extreme stupidity, in the case of tanning beds: (http://image3.examiner.com/images/blog/EXID20836/images/ex_mike_the_situation_abs(2).jpg). (Don’t think I’m hatin’ on The Situation- gotta love him!)

Yet, despite these factors, lots of gals (and guys) still want that healthy glow- I can’t blame them! I’ve been using products to achieve a fake tan for several years now, mainly Jergens Natural Glow. But then, lo and behold, my mom went to Sephora one day and presented me with a Kate Somerville Somer360 Tan Towelette to try out- and then I knew…

There had to be a TAN THROWDOWN.

Jergens Natural Glow vs. Somer360 Tanning Towelette!

Jergens Natural Glow Revitalizing Daily Moisturizer

Drugstore.com

What is it?: Jergens Natural Glow is a lotion which darkens your fake tan with each application every day. Naturally, you’re supposed to use it daily.

Price: $8.49 on Drugstore.com

Lasting Power (after one week of applying): About 4 days

Pros:
*Doubles as a moisturizer
*Inexpensive
*Easy to use- it applies like a lotion
*Even coverage
*Ability to choose shade of tan

Cons:
*Smells weird
*Long drying time
*Requires many applications for substantial tan

Kate Somerville Somer360 Tanning Towelettes

Sephora.com

What is it?: Just as the title suggests, the Somer360 is a towelette the size of a unfolded standard square napkin, saturated in mysterious tanning fluid. This, uh, fluid, goes on clear.

Price: $6 for 1 towelette, $48 for 8

Lasting Power (1 Towelette): Around 5 days, although it begins to rub off after the 4th.

Pros
*Good color- I’m very pale, and this delivered a believable color.
*One time application, and you’re good to go for 5 days!
*Fast-drying

Cons
*Very Expensive! Every tan costs $6, even in the bulk package!
*Because it applies on clear, it was very hard to see even it out. As a result, I ended up with bare spots on my legs.
______
Conclusion: In conclusion, I’m staying true to Jergens Natural Glow Moisturizer. It’s less expensive and easier to use, plus it’s handy to have as body lotion as well. Although I don’t like the hassle, the ability to gradually tan by applying the lotion daily is useful to many people. The tanning towelettes are nice in a quick fix, but just not practical. They’re very expensive and I find the towelette hard to use- it was awkwardly large for a ‘towelette’ and hard to use, and as a result my tan appeared sloppy.

Did I do a good job comparing the two? What are your thoughts? Comment back!

Blue-Green Frankenpolish

11 Aug

Hello!

So I have a confession- I’m kind of half and half on this post today. On one hand, I’d like to show you all my new nail polish color, but on the other, it’s a somewhat messy manicure. Regardless, here it is!

I used (from left) Essie Mint Candy Apple, Sally Hansen Insta-Dry in Mint Sprint, and a nameless Sephora blue.

I mixed my polish (about a quarter sized amount) in a contacts holder. I didn’t measure the amounts of polish, but the base was Mint Sprint- I added about half of that of Mint Candy Apple, and then about 5 drops of the Sephora blue. What I got was…

This was a hard color to photograph! It’s more blue in real life. It reacted to the camera similarly to the China Glaze color Flyin’ High.

I also apologize for the heinous manicure! The Sephora blue was horribly thick and as a result made the polish a pain to put on. I’ll do better next time. But I just had to show y’all this color!

What’s your favorite nail polish color? Brand?

Romper-rific Polyvore

9 Aug

Howdy!

I have a new Polyvore set for y’all today. This set features an expensive base piece (romper) with much cheaper Forever 21 accessories. In the event that you feel inspired by my humble Polyvore set, it’d be just as easy to wear a white top and khaki shorts.

Although I love this odd romper, I’m not sure if I would ever wear it- I feel like it takes certain body types to be able to pull off such a casual, almost messy piece of clothing and turn it into something stylish. I expect Europeans would be good at wearing this romper…curse them and their effortless style!!!

Durr Hurr Pretty Colors

8 Aug

As the title suggests, I just derp out when I see a bunch of colors smashed together, commonly known as a rainbow. My love for color is what brought me into the wonderful world of fashion and fashion blogging- think nail polish and eye shadow!

So when these websites rear their heads, I might as well kiss my sweet mind goodbye.

Look at these rainbow BAMFs!

Hong Kong Garden

8 Aug

Bonus points for anyone who knows the reference…

Just kidding, Hong Kong Garden is a song by Siouxsie and the Banshees. It’s on the Marie Antoinette sound track, and everyone knows how much fashionphiles and visual-addicts in general lurve that movie. It’s practically Mecca to us, not to mention it won an Academy Award for costume design, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, this post isn’t about Marie Antoinette, it’s about being inspired by the song to make a somewhat edgy and neon-themed Polyvore set. Also- it should be known that I’m extremely cheap, and therefore can’t and won’t afford some of these items in the set, such as the leggings- you can find leather leggings for very cheap at Forever 21.

Enjoy!

P.S- I’m going to be frank, I attempted to have a theme with the chinese symbols, but clearly it didn’t work out when ‘Sparrow’ randomly jumped in there.
